Domain Purchase, Registration, and Transfer: A Knowledge Base

This guide provides a comprehensive overview of domain name management.

Domain Name Fundamentals

A domain name is your website's address on the internet (e.g., www.example.com). It acts as a human-readable identifier for a website's numerical IP address. Domain names are not "bought" in the traditional sense; rather, they are registered or leased for a specific period of time.

Domain Name Registry: The organization that manages top-level domains (TLDs) like .com, .net, or .org. They maintain the central database of all registered names under that TLD.

Domain Name Registrar: A company accredited by ICANN to sell domain name registrations to the public. They are the middleman between you and the registry.ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers): The non-profit organization responsible for coordinating the internet's naming systems to ensure stability and security.
Domain Purchase and Registration
Purchasing a domain name is the process of registering it for a set period, typically from one to ten years.

Steps to Register a Domain Name:

Choose a Domain Name:

  • Keep it Short and Memorable: Easy to spell, pronounce, and remember.
  • Avoid Hyphens and Numbers: These can be confusing and look unprofessional.
  • Use a Relevant Extension: While .com is the most common, consider other TLDs like .net, .org, or country-specific ones like .co.uk.
  • Check for Brand Consistency: Ensure the domain name matches your business or brand name.
  • Check for Availability: Use a registrar's search tool to see if your desired name is available.

  • Complete the Purchase: Provide your contact information, which is required by ICANN, and complete the payment. Most registrars offer automatic renewal to prevent your domain from expiring.

Domain Transfer

A domain transfer is the process of moving a domain name from one registrar to another. This is often done for better pricing, improved support, or to consolidate all domains with a single provider.

Steps to Transfer a Domain Name:

  • Check Eligibility: Your domain must be at least 60 days old and not have been transferred within the last 60 days (ICANN policy).
Prepare the Domain at the Current Registrar:
  • Unlock the Domain: Domains are "locked" by default to prevent unauthorized transfers. You must log in to your current registrar's dashboard and disable this lock.
  • Obtain the Authorization Code: This is a unique alphanumeric string (also called an EPP code or transfer key) required to authorize the transfer. You can find this in your current registrar's control panel.
  • Update Contact Information: Ensure your WHOIS/RDAP contact information, especially the email address, is current. All transfer-related communications will be sent to this email.
  • Disable Domain Privacy: In some cases, privacy protection must be disabled temporarily to allow the new registrar to verify ownership.
Initiate the Transfer at the New Registrar:
  • Go to the new registrar's website and start the transfer process.
Enter the domain name and the authorization code.
Complete the payment. A domain transfer fee typically includes a free year of renewal.
    Confirm and Wait:

You will receive a confirmation email from the new registrar. Follow the instructions to approve the transfer.
The process is not instant and can take up to seven days to complete. The new registrar will notify you when it's finished.
Important Transfer Considerations:

Backup Your Data: Always back up your website and email data before a transfer to avoid potential downtime or loss of information.
60-Day Lock: Changing your contact information can trigger a 60-day lock, preventing a transfer during that period. It's best to handle transfers and contact updates separately.

SEO Impact: Transferring a domain does not impact your website's search engine optimization (SEO) as long as the domain name and content remain the same.
